Set at the foot of
the Sierra Almijara and Sierra Nevada mountains, approximately
50 km east of Malaga, lies the town of Nerja on the
Costa del Sol. It is situated on a rugged headland overlooking
the Mediterranean.
The heart of Nerja is its spectacular
Balcón de Europa, the "Balcony of Europe",
a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering
cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with
sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the
small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop
of hazy blue mountains.
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes here to choose
from, and the visitor can hire a horse-drawn carriage
to explore the most romantic corner of the town.
The town's monuments include the 17th century Church
of El Salvador, in a style which is a charming mixture
of baroque and Moorish, or mudéjar, and the beautiful
Gardens of Capistrano Playa, which descend to Burriana
Beach.
Nerja enjoys the fabulous climate of the Costa Del
Sol. The average yearly temperature is 19ºC, in
winter 11ºC and in summer 26ºC. Protected
by the Sierra mountain range to the North Nerja boasts
a mild winter. This agreeable climate is due to it's
southerly location and the proximity to the Mediterranean
Sea. Rainfall is about 424mm per year mainly in the
months of November to February. There is a total of
more than 3000 hours of sunshine per year.
